Relation between Astrology and Divorce

Although there is no provision or mention of anything like a divorce in Traditional Hindu or Vedic culture, it is frequently encountered phenomenon nowadays and a provision of law.  As per ‘shastras’, a Vedic marriage meant couple would be together not only in this birth but also in forthcoming 6 more births. But in the modern times, divorce is a legal provision inspired by western culture.

Although there are glaring behavioral reasons of a divorce or a separation between married couples nowadays, we will restrict our discussion to mainly to the astrological aspects that indicate a divorce.

However, it is imperative to mention that well-developed intellect, mind, and a realization of the aim with which marriage is being done is important factor. Emotional compatibility casts a major influence on the quality of this relationship.

During my practice as a Vedic Astrologer in Canada and India, I have observed the main planets affecting marriage and divorce are Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.  The 8th and the 12th houses play a major role in determining separation.

Sun:  If the Sun or its Lord is in conjunction with the 7th house or is surrounded by malefic planets, there would be some problems in marital life. As the nature of Sun is commanding and authoritative, the problem in the relationship starts with ego.  Moreover, the positioning of Sun in the 1st or the 7th house would give rise to divorce.

If Venus is in conjunction with sun in 7 degrees and 30 minutes, in 2nd, 4th, 7th or 9th house, the chances of separation and divorce are more likely than not.

Mars : The effect of Mars is related to an entirely different category called as Manglic dosh. In this dosha,  Mars is situated  in 2nd, 4th ,7th ,8th and  12th house and is known as the Mangal dosha.  When Mars is present in the 1st or 7th houses, there is increased likelihood of verbal and physical conflicts in between the married couple.

When there are additional associations with Lords of 3rd and 11th house in the girl’s horoscope, serious issues like assault by mother-in-law and father-in law would also happen. If Mars has formed arajyoga in its own house and is not surrounded by malefic planets, it would give rise to a happy married life.

Saturn: If Saturn is associated to the 1st or the 7th houses, this would make the partners very suspicious in nature and would lead to conflicts, quarrels and a separation that lasts a lifetime may be without any official divorce.  Saturn is the Lord planet of misunderstandings and can also cause impotency in malefic alignments.

Rahu: When Rahu is in conjunction with 7th house, the person is likely to be involved in extra-marital affairs.  Seeking physical or sexual pleasure from outer sources is the main reason behind separations that are caused due to Rahu.

Ketu: Ketu is a planet related to mysteriousness and mysticism. Thus, its role in a causing a separation may be complex.

On one hand, Ketu gives an objective to the native to get married that can be addition of a family member. But, nature of Ketu is to burn all objects of material desire into fire.

If Ketu is in conjunction with the 7th house, it can make a person desireless or unwilling for a married life. In case if Venus is in conjunction with Ketu, there is also a possibility for a person to have pre-marital relationships or extra-marital relationships within the family.  Sometimes, a couple stays together only till a baby is born. After this, a separation occurs.
